So, yeah, it’s not the best idea to suggest that a young woman on the red carpet who has dreds smells like weed. Actually, it’s pretty ignorant. But I must say Giuliana Rancic’s apology to Zendaya seemed sincere – which is not always the case when a celeb crosses the race line.
She talked about learning a lot, she apologized, accepted responsibility, and expressed why it’s not cool to perpetuate stereotypes. Of course, some will say, she’s acting, she doesn’t care, she didn’t change, etc. I say, so what? It’s more important that she acted promptly, appeared believable and hit all the right notes to turn this into a teachable moment that contributes to the dialogue around race, appearance, the negative stereotypes minorities or those who are different are often exposed to, and the damage they can do.
Let’s accept her apology in good faith. It does no good to drag these things out or to bash people excessively when they make mistakes. People are not perfect. Things happen. Let’s learn and move on with grace.
Good Piece. ^_^!
I like what she said at the end about not perpetuating Stereotypes….it’s crazy how we will justify ignorant generalizations for the sake of laughs…
