Everything’s so easy to do on the Internet these days, I naively thought I could just send Shonda Rhimes a message on Twitter sharing my new idea for Scandal. Um, Kellye? It’s Twitter. You get 140 characters. That’s it! So, I’m sharing it here, cuz I wrote it and why waste it?
The Scandal Plot Thickens – What Could Happen Next
Ms. Rhimes –
I got up at 5:40 this morning to watch last nights episode of Scandal, and you did not disappoint!
Fitz will probably go down in history as one of the most romantic characters to ever sacrifice for love. And that’s why I’m writing.
I’m sure you have something stellar lined up that will make my little head want to explode with anticipation and shock. But if you are still casting about for ways to fix this latest Mellie inspired mess, I thought I’d offer – postpartum depression.
I think deep down Mellie did this drastic reveal because she loves Fitz and was hoping that he would choose her. I think she cares for him, likely loves him. I can’t think of another reason a woman would endure the disrespect Fitz has put her through with the affair – erections in his sleep? Oi!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m firmly on team Olitz, that kind of love deserves a shot – and I confess, I adore the fact that Olivia is a comfortable shade of brown and brilliant and short – but a bit of sympathy for poor Mellie could serve everyone’s purpose. I think it would also be unexpected.
Now that Olitz is back together, Olivia may turn her attention to fixing this latest disaster while her team tears away at the mole sitch. But Quinn could suddenly recall an article she read in the Wsj about the devastating and long reaching effects of postpartum depression. Info will come out a la the spin machine that is Cyrus and Olivia – his husband could help spread things via his fabulous new on air job – that Mellie is suffering from this condition.
She needs to be challenged, research says. As much as she loves the baby, a brilliant mind like Mellie’s needs to be constantly engaged, some PhD neuroscientist says. That brain activity will facilitate healing of the hormones that are currently making the poor woman misinterpret things that are actually innocent. “It’s that whole mind body connection,” Abby could say, buying into the plot.
That way, Mellie gets her big issue to help ensure her future after Fitz, and Fitz gets to remain President. It would also give Fitz a chance to tell Mellie that he once loved her, still cares for her, and is sorry that he fell in love with Olivia, that he knows it has caused her pain that he did not intend. I don’t think it could hurt his cause as THE most romantic man ever one bit if he kisses his poor wife on the cheek, and offers an apology – right before he goes back to Olivia and breaks her off! LOL.
I haven’t a clue how you will fix the mole thing – though I’m glad it’s not Cyrus; I never thought it was. His loyalty to Fitz is warped at times, but it’s true. – but I was thinking for next season you’ll need tension between Fitz and Olivia. How about another woman? It will be totally innocent of course. But this woman could be black (or maybe Hispanic?) brilliant, beautiful and have some important-ish position in the White House. She could be a friend to Fitz, and while they will never discuss his situation with Olivia, she might guess, and with his unofficial approval, set out to make Olivia a little jealous.
Just a few thoughts from one writer to another. I love the show! My TV doesn’t even show channels – antenna fiasco, don’t ask – so I have to watch it on my iPad, but I will be eagerly awaiting the next episode!
Impatiently yours,
Kellye Whitney
